‘Field for Somerset’ at Barrington Court

The artwork, on show at Barrington Court, will be part of Somerset Arts Week from 15 to 30 September.

Gormley’s exhibition, Field for the British Isles was in the National Trust house until the end of August with 40,000 small clay figures filling three of the rooms. Barrington Court was chosen to exhibit a special selection of pieces on loan from the Arts Council Collection, the largest loan collection of modern and contemporary British art in the world, as part of the Trust New Art programme.

While the work was in place, visitors were invited to make their own figures, following the same instructions that Antony Gormley gave to the original volunteer makers of his artwork in St Helensin 1993.

Once made, using an air drying clay, the figures were placed inside the ‘Bustalls’ at Barrington which had been previously used to raise veal calves and able to hold about 1,500 of the figures.

‘This is our own version of Field, a Field for Somerset, created in the same spirit of Antony Gormley’s original,” said Paul Howard, Barrington’s programme manager.

“We asked the volunteers to make the figures with just the same simple instructions to use their hands to form the clay into rough figures, and then place them among the others so the whole group appears to have invaded the space. In common with Antony Gormley’s original, the figures are each obviously hand made, very simple and yet they look back at you as you look into the bustalls.”

The summer long exhibition has proved a big hit for Barrington Court with many people attracted to the house near Illminster in South Somerset to see the exhibition.

The new Field for Somerset will remain on show as a feature of Somerset Arts Week until 30 September.
